Waterloo Balcony Bar
Overview

To design, supply and install a new Bar consisting of bomb blast shopfront, balustrading and feature spiral staircase.

Scope

The Project was to design a new bar at the end of the mezzanine floor at Waterloo, including removal of the existing bar –The Cabin Bar. The Cabin bar was previously an open Bar with bar stools surrounding it. The major fault with this design was its exposure to the station environment which resulted in the customers being cold in the winter, and overly hot in the summer which affected their venue. To overcome these faults, the new designs features an enclosure environment on the station mezzanine floor, and a feature spiral staircase leading to a new mezzanine floor, so the customers have a choice of where they wish to seat depending on the weather. In addition, the design has been based upon the old cinema which use to be located in this area. The Waterloo New Cinema was opened in 1934 and showed films until March 1970.

  • Removal of existing bar and floor finishes;
  • Installation new bomb blast shopfront, balustrading and feature spiral staircase;
  • New internal mezzanine floor made of reinforced concrete;
  • Fire protection throughout;
  • Drylining.
Challenges & Solutions

The worksite is situated on the mezzanine floor, a level above Platform 1 of Waterloo Station (3rdbusiest in London). During the whole project, the site had to operate around the everyday functions of the station, meaning that bordering of the site had to be sufficient, Health & Safety was of paramount concern, and getting deliveries to the site had to be arranged prior and worked around. Having such a strong relationship with Network Rail already in place meant that finding suitable solutions to each of these challenges is something that Spence has taken pride in mastering over the many years and projects that we have completed together.

TVRA (Threat, Vulnerability and Risk Assessment)was carried out by Crossley Consult with members ofBritish Transport Police, Regional Security Planning Specialist and Station Security Leads to establish the potential risks to Waterloo Station, and as a result addressed these within the design.
