HEALTH, SAFETY, QUALITY AND ENVIRONMENT

Safety is at the forefront of everything we do. Providing a working environment which is safe and healthy for all employees and those affected by our activities is the main priority for Spence. We have a well-established HSQE Department which ensures the highest standards are achieved through a thorough monitoring procedure of all our operations and activities.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Our Health and Safety Policy is communicated to every single one of our employees, as is the distribution of best practice procedures. Spence actively participates in several industry led H&S initiatives.

In addition, regular in-house awareness training is carried out for all staff and operatives, together with out-sourced specialist courses to complement our comprehensive training programme.

Our commitment to the development of our staff training is highlighted in our support of the Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS): all staff and workforce alike holding cards to reflect their experience and qualifications.

To maintain our aim towards continued excellence, the Spence system is not only robust and effective, but is continually developed and improved to reflect the changing diversity within the company. This continuously evolves by a two-way flow of information, focus meetings and regular annual review of all existing and new policies for compliance, by the Senior Management team who hold overall responsibility for HSQE within the company.

Our Integrated Management System has been certified through BSI to ISO standards 9001:2015, 14001:2015 and 45001:2018. This ensures Spence can achieve a high level of performance in design, construction and maintain the health and welfare of all involved with our projects.

We believe this emphasis placed on Health and Safety benefits not only our staff but also everyone involved in our operations.

ACCREDITATIONS

Having achieved wide respect for our success in construction, civil engineering and property services, we’re also proud of the certifications we have achieved from accreditation bodies. These include ISO disciplines of:

BS EN ISO 9001:2015
BS EN ISO 14001:2015
BS EN ISO 45001:2018

We are also a Principal Contractor License holder (PCL) for Network Rail (NR/L2/INI/CP0070) undertaking works nationwide.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Since Robert Spence won his second contract based on the craftsmanship of his very first assignment, that desire to achieve the best quality has been a hallmark of Spence. With 40 years as expert construction specialists, civil engineers and property services consultants, we always strive to provide the highest quality to all our endeavours. In collating all of Spence’s best practices and procedures, we hold certification from BSI for our Quality Assurance to BS-EN-ISO-9001:2022.

Our dedicated Quality Assurance team within our HSQE Department here at Spence ensure that our activities and service meet the requirements of our clients at all times. To sustain a high level of quality management, continuous improvement is implemented within each sector of the company. Procedures are monitored, existing systems are reviewed and revised methods are proposed to maintain Quality Assurance.

Through regular training awareness, all employees are involved in actively communicating the aims of our quality systems, ensuring consistency at all levels. Specific induction and training is given, where necessary, to ensure that the relevant knowledge and experience is acquired for successful implementation of our management systems.

The HSQE Department is headed by the HSQE Director, who reports directly to the Managing Director. The HSQE director is supported by a HSQE Manager and HSQE Administrator. This ensures true accountability at every level.

The qualifications held within the HSQE team are to a level of Civil Engineer, NEBOSH, NEBSM, Internal Auditor and Accident & Incident Investigation, and between them they have decades of experience within the Construction and Railway industries.

SUPPLY CHAIN

ENVIRONMENT

Every single member of the team here at Spence knows that almost everything we do has some impact on the environment – built or natural. As such, we are all extremely proud of our ongoing efforts to control consumption, reduce disruption and make a positive contribution to the environment and the quality of life for everyone involved and affected by our work. We are fully committed to ensuring that all management systems meet the requirements of current environmental regulations and legislation to achieve and maintain compliance with BS-EN-ISO 14001: 2015 Environmental Management.

Spence always works closely with our client and environmental design consultants in project planning and will always offer best practice solutions prior to works commencing.

Where possible, it is our aim to minimise our use of resources, prevent pollution and control waste. And where practicable and economically viable, we shall always recover and recycle in preference to disposal. We will meet product, safety, quality and environmental requirements as required by our customers and produce job-specific KPI’s that monitor usage and waste of materials.

We always communicate this policy and the results of our activities to members of the Company, to our suppliers and sub contractors, to our clients and to third parties as appropriate.
